A Few Highlights

  • On July 1, 2007. Senate Bill 162 established the California Department of Public Health, once again as a separate department, within the existing Health and Human Services Agency.
  • The first director of CDPH is Dr. Mark Horton. He had been the state public health officer for the State of Nebraska, the California State Public Health Officer while at the California Department of Health Services, and was the health officer for Orange County when was called upon to help form the new CDPH.
  • Southern California Fire Response: (2007-2008)
    In late October, 2007, Southern California experienced 30 wildfires which burned approximately 970,977 acres over seven different counties, from Santa Barbara to the U.S./Mexico border. CDPH subject matter experts participated in Multi-Agency Coordination Group meetings to discuss the harmful effects of fire ash and smoke on residents affected by the incident, and provided guidance through its “Wildfire Smoke, A Guide for Public Health Officials.”
  • Breastfeeding: Investing in California’s Future Report Released
  • Statewide guidelines for Human Stem Cell research Released
  • California Stroke Registry Established
  • The Burden of Cardiovascular Disease in California A Report of the California Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention Program Released
  • California’s Master Plan for Heart Disease and Stroke Prevention and Treatment 2007-2015 Released
  • Office of Binational Border Health Implemented Cervical Cancer Project In 2007, the Office of Binational Border Health (OBBH), the Public Health Institute (PHI), and Mexico’s Migrant Health Program in the Ministry of Health implemented the cervical cancer project with a goal to prevent invasive cervical cancer among Latina women in California, Baja California, and in northern Mexico. In 2007, OBBH formed the San Diego Promotors Education Committee (SDPEC), to support Promotors/Community Health Workers throughout the California-Baja California border region.
