× The federal government has shut down due to the failures of the President and Congress to continue government funding. Millions of Californians receiving benefits from state programs may be impacted. For now, California’s Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) will continue to provide services and enroll eligible families as long as funding is available. No new federal funding to California WIC will be provided until the President and Congress take action. Families should continue to use their WIC benefits and attend their WIC appointments. This information is subject to change, so please monitor the California WIC website for updates.

Please be wary of potential highly partisan political messaging while visiting federal government websites for information related to the federal government shutdown.

SUBJECT:
COVID-19 Vaccine Minor Consent Guidance

Updates as of July 18, 2022:

  • Aligned with the U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the Federal Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to grant emergency use authorization (EUA) of COVID-19 vaccines for children as young as 6 months.

Background

Administration of COVID-19 vaccines to as many Californians as possible is critical to control the pandemic. Based on evidence of safety and efficacy, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has now reduced the minimum age for its Emergency Use Authorization of COVID-19 vaccines to 6 months.

Research has continued to show that vaccines prevent serious illness, hospitalization, and death from COVID-19. All children 6 months to 17 years should complete their primary series. Children aged 5 and older are eligible for and recommended to get a first booster dose. More information on the risks and benefits of the authorized vaccine products from Moderna and Pfizer vaccines can be found on the FDA website

Options for Consent

Persons younger than 18 years must have parental or guardian consent given by a legally authorized representative (parent or guardian). An emancipated minor may consent for him/herself.

Allowable consent includes:
