Nearly 33,000 firefighters protect Californians and their property from fire, the most of any state. Nationally, 80 to 100 firefighters die on the job each year, according to the U.S. Fire Administration's Annual Report.
The NIOSH Fire Fighter Fatality Investigation and Prevention Program (FFFIPP) investigates firefighter line-of-duty fatalities to address occupational hazards and prevent future deaths and injuries. OHB investigates selected fatalities in California and the Western U.S., including in Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Montana, Utah, Nevada, Arizona, and New Mexico.
