What is insect repellent?

Insect repellent is a product used to keep insects from biting you and possibly spreading viruses or bacteria that cause diseases, such as West Nile virus and Lyme disease. Different types of repellents, such as lotions or sprays, are used on skin and clothing to keep insects away. Repellents do not kill insects. The active ingredients in repellent products work by blocking an insectā€™s ability to ā€œsmellā€ you. If an insect cannot smell you, it will have a harder time finding and biting you.
