Respiraā€‹ā€‹tory Virus Dashboard

Welcome to the CDPH Respiratory Virus Dashboard.

Here, you'll find weekly updates on hospitalizations, deaths and tests for both influenza and COVID-19, as well as ICU bed availability in California. This dashboard focuses on state-level data to give a clear overview of respiratory virus trends.

For a deeper analysis, see our downloadable data under the graphs. For more detailed COVID-19 data, including county-level information, visit the CDC's COVID Data Tracker.ā€‹

ā€‹Tracking Respiratory Viruses in Californiaā€‹

  • All daily averages are 7-day averages.
  • Testing data:
    • COVID-19
      • Represents data received by the California Department of Public Health through electronic laboratory reporting of molecular test results for COVID-19 among residents of California.
      • Data are up to date through the previous Monday.
      • Test positivity is based on a 7-day average.ā€‹
    • Influenzaā€‹
      • Represents data received by the California Department of Public Health from clinical sentinel laboratories in California. These laboratories report the aggregate number of laboratory-confirmed influenza virus detections and total tests performed on a weekly basis.
      • These data do not represent all influenza testing occurring in California.
      • Test positivity is based on influenza testing and results reported during a given week.
      • Weeks are defined as Sunday through Saturday.
  • Hospitalization data:
    • New admission counts include patients who were admitted to an inpatient bed on the previous calendar day who had laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 or influenza at the time of admission.
  • Death data:
    • COVID-19
      • As of January 1, 2023, death data was sourced from the California Department of Public Health, California Comprehensive Death File (Dynamic), 2023ā€“Present. Prior to January 1, 2023, death data was sourced from the COVID-19 case registry. The change in data source occurred in July 2023 and was applied retroactively to all 2023 data to provide a consistent source of death data for the year of 2023.
    • Influenza
      • All influenza death data are sourced from the California Department of Public Health, California Comprehensive Death File (Dynamic), 2020ā€“Present.
    • These deaths do not necessarily represent laboratory-confirmed deaths.
    • Deaths due to COVID-19 and influenza represent deaths occurring in California among residents who had COVID-19 or influenza noted anywhere on the death certificate.
  • Archived historical COVID-19 and influenza data are available on the Open Data Portal.
  • More information on influenza surveillance can be found in the Influenza, RSV, and Other Respiratory Virus Weekly Report. Please note that the Influenza, RSV, and Other Respiratory Weekly Report only includes data through the previous Saturday, and data presented on the dashboard might include additional data reported after Saturday.ā€‹

  • Hospitalization and ICU admission data were not collected prior to 2020 and are not available for dates in early 2020. Data collected from 2020 to 5/10/2023 are sourced from the California Hospital Association (CHA) Survey. Data collected on or after 5/11/2023 are sourced from CDC's National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN).
  • ICU bed availability represents adult ICU beds only.
  • Hospitalization counts include all patients with laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 or influenza during their hospital stay. This does not necessarily mean patients were hospitalized because of COVID-19/influenza symptoms or complications.
  • New admission counts include patients who were admitted to an inpatient bed on the previous calendar day who had laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 or influenza at the time of admission.
  • ICU patients include all patients with laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 or influenza who were admitted to the hospital ICU. This includes occupied PICU and adult ICU beds.

  • COVID-19
    • Represent data received by the California Department of Public Health through electronic laboratory reporting of test results for COVID-19 among residents of California.
    • Testing date is the date the test was administered, and data are up to date through the previous Monday.
    • Test positivity is based on a 7-day average.
    • Test positivity is calculated as the number of positive molecular tests divided by the total molecular tests performed. Test positivity includes people in state and federal prisons, US Immigration and Customs Enforcement facilities, US Marshal detention facilities, and Department of State Hospitals facilities.
  • Influenza
    • Represent data received by the California Department of Public Health from clinical sentinel laboratories in California. These laboratories report the aggregate number of laboratory-confirmed influenza virus detections and total tests performed on a weekly basis. Clinical sentinel laboratories use both molecular and antigen-based testing methods for influenza.
    • These data do not represent all influenza testing occurring in California.
    • Test positivity is based on influenza testing and results reported during a given week. Weeks are defined as Sunday through Saturday. Data are provided by participating clinical sentinel laboratories.
    • Test positivity is calculated as the number of positive tests divided by the total tests performed. Test positivity includes people tested at participating clinical sentinel laboratories.
