Provider Detailing for STD Prevention

Provider Detailing is emerging as a core intervention to improve screening, adequate treatment, and disease reporting for STD prevention across the country. Provider detailing is defined as structured visits by trained personnel to health care practices for the purpose of delivering tailored training and technical assistance and to encourage best practices. It is sometimes called provider outreach, provider visitation, or public health detailing. Provider detailing is a time and resource intensive activity; however, it can be an effective way to engage with health care providers on a priority topic and strengthen relationships with community providers. Provider detailing can be conducted by various local health jurisdiction (LHJ) staff, including but not limited to disease intervention specialists, health educators, public health nurses, or program managers. LHJ STD staff should make efforts to coordinate with local HIV or Maternal, Child, and Adolescent Health (MCAH) program staff when conducting provider detailing to leverage shared goals, maximize limited resources, and ensure deduplication of efforts.

Resources for provider detailing packets on the following topics are outlined below: Congenital Syphilis (CS) Prevention, Adolescent Sexual Health, Sexual Health for Gay, Bisexual & Other Men Who Have Sex with Men (MSM) and Transgender Women, and HIV Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP). General resources that could also be included in your provider detailing packets are: Californiaā€™s STI Treatment Guidelines for Adults and AdolescentsSTI Treatment Recommendations in Pregnancy, STI/HIV Screening Recommendations in Pregnancy, STD Clinical Consultation Network Postcard (PDF), National STD Curriculum Postcard (PDF), plus local STD epidemiology summaries and/or health alerts.
