× The federal government has shut down due to the failures of the President and Congress to continue government funding. Millions of Californians receiving benefits from state programs may be impacted. For now, California’s Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) will continue to provide services and enroll eligible families as long as funding is available. No new federal funding to California WIC will be provided until the President and Congress take action. Families should continue to use their WIC benefits and attend their WIC appointments. This information is subject to change, so please monitor the California WIC website for updates.

Please be wary of potential highly partisan political messaging while visiting federal government websites for information related to the federal government shutdown.

The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) launched the Asthma Management Academy (AsMA) to reduce the burden of asthma in California's most highly impacted communities. The program's curriculum meets the unique needs of non-licensed members of the asthma care team. These include community health workers (CHWs), promotoras de salud, health or patient advocates, and others with trusted relationships who visit the homes of those in underserved areas. CDPH is offering the AsMA curriculum as a series of in-person training modules for these valued members of the asthma care team.

Asthma Management Academy - 201 Series

This series has two sessions.  Modules cover the following:

  • Best Practices for Home Visiting
  • How to Conduct an In-Home Trigger Assessment

This series builds on the content presented in the 101 series. It is in development with our program partners, Esperanza Community Housing Corporation and Comite Civico del Valley, along with Central California Asthma Collaborative, Asthma Start, the Children's Clinic, Inland Empire Health Plan, San Francisco Department of Public Health, and Long Beach Alliance for Children with Asthma. This series will available soon.

AsMA curricula are based on the National Asthma Guidelines and adapted by the Association of Asthma Educators (AAE), CDPH, and asthma home-visiting community-based organizations.

AsMA is a project of the California Department of Public Health (CDPH). AsMA was developed by CDPH with funding from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC-RFA-EH14-140407CONT15) and the CA Proposition 99 Tobacco Tax.
