× The federal government has shut down due to the failures of the President and Congress to continue government funding. Millions of Californians receiving benefits from state programs may be impacted. For now, California’s Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) will continue to provide services and enroll eligible families as long as funding is available. No new federal funding to California WIC will be provided until the President and Congress take action. Families should continue to use their WIC benefits and attend their WIC appointments. Minority AIDS Initiative

Who we are

The Minority AIDS Initiative (MAI) is funded by the Health Resources and Services Administration's (HRSA) Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program (Part B). MAI was enacted as a response to the disproportionate impact of HIV on communities of color. California's Integrated HIV Surveillance, Prevention, and Care Plan (2016) found notable disparities in (1) viral suppression rates among African Americans, American Indians, and Latinos and (2) linkage to care among newly diagnosed African Americans and Latinos. MAI seeks to reduce these disparities by funding outreach efforts to link people of color living with HIV to medical care and treatment.

What we provide

Services are provided locally by funded health departments and community-based organizations in 18 counties in California. The availability of services may differ from county to county. Services may include such things as assistance with addressing barriers to their successful engagement in care, education about HIV, treatment adherence, and risk reduction, and linkage to HIV care and treatment including the AIDS Drug Assistance Program (ADAP) and Office of AIDS-Health Insurance Premium Payment (OA-HIPP).

Who is eligible

​​To be eligible for MAI services, individuals must be (1) a person of color and (2) HIV positive.
