Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a developmental brain disorder that affects how people relate to and communicate with others. People with ASD might say or do the same things over and over, or react strongly to changes in their daily routine.

ASD can be mild in some people and severe in others. Children with more severe ASD may not be able to speak or go to a typical school. ASD is probably present from birth or very early in life, but it may not be diagnosed until a child starts preschool or school. 

While there is no cure for ASD, supportive services and education can be very helpful. If you think your child might have ASD, talk to your child’s doctor.

Scientists do not know all the causes of ASD, but the environment probably plays a role. At EHIB, we work with outside scientists to look into different aspects of the environment that might contribute to the development of ASD.
