Environmental Epidemiology Section

Our Work

The Environmental Epidemiology Section conducts scientific studies and investigations on how environmental exposures may affect the health of Californians. We strive to ensure the needs of vulnerable and disadvantaged groups are addressed, including children, pregnant women, and low income households. Our work includes the following areas:

Investigating

• Health effects of environmental factors such as tobacco smoke, endocrine disrupting chemicals, pesticides, and traffic.
• Disease clusters where communities are concerned about a possible problem in the environment.
• Natural and man-made disasters such as drought, floods, earthquakes, and climate change.
• Emerging environmental concerns, such as electromagnetic fields and vaping.

Improving Research Capabilities

• Developing specimen and data resources and analytic approaches to enable more and better studies
• Collaborating with field experts, stakeholders, and communities.
• Integrating community participation and environmental justice perspectives into scientific efforts.

Sharing our Findings

• By communicating study results to empower communities.
• Through advising local and state authorities on the hazards of environmental exposures.
• By publishing and distributing research findings to the public.​​
