California Genetic Counselor Licensure Program

Information on the Application Process:

1. When applying for a Genetic Counselor license through The Genetic Disease Screening Program Portal, do all Internet browsers work?

For the optimal experience using this application, we recommend using Chrome, Firefox, Edge, or Safari. This application is not optimized for Internet Explorer and this may mean that certain features and functions will not behave as intended.

2.  How can I get a receipt for my payment?

Once you have submitted your application and paid your license fees, you will be able to download a copy of you receipt from your dashboard.

3.  Can a Counselor who is a non-US citizen apply to become a license Genetic Counselor in the State of California?

Under California law, a certified member of the American Board of Genetic Counselors authorized to work in the US with a H1-b or other Visa or Green Card  may be licensed if they have a Social Security number.  Therefore a non-US citizen must submit a copy of their status and a copy of their Social Security card.

4.  How will the public and employers verify that Genetic Counselors are licensed?

On the California Genetic Counselor Licensure Program landing page website, there is a link called the California Genetic Counselor lookup portal. Once you click on the link you may search by last name, first or Genetic Counselor license number.  The results includes first and last name, license number, expiration date, and status of the license and option to print a verification letter of your most current licensure status.
