AFL 22-16
June 29, 2022

TO:
All Facilities

SUBJECT:
Resource Requests for Contrast Media

All Facilities Letter (AFL) Summary

This AFL provides notice of availability of contrast media to meet critical needs. The resource requests should go through the facility's local Medical and Health Operational Area Coordinator (MHOAC) using established processes.

Due to the national shortage of contrast media, the Multi-Agency Coordination (MAC) Group has been activated to adjudicate resource requests related to contrast media. To date the State has only been able to procure a small quantity of ISOVUE-200 (lopamidol Injection 41%). The MAC Group will evaluate resource requests, review current inventory levels, and allocate distribution to the areas in critical need based on a uniform decision-making matrix. Resource requests are filled according to the results of the matrix.

The MAC Group includes representatives from the Emergency Management Services Authority (EMSA), and the California Department of Public Health (CDPH). Resource requests are submitted to the MAC Group using the process in the Standardized Emergency Management System (SEMS) and the Public Health & Medical Emergency Operations Manual.

At this time, only resource requests for critically needed ISOVUE-200, of seven-days of supply quantity, will be evaluated by the MAC Group. Resources will only be allocated to impacted facilities that have depleted their current inventory or will soon be depleting their current inventory that will be detrimental to facility operations. This information is then compared to the state's inventory. The MAC Group is committed to ensuring that facilities can maintain a level of resource availability to support immediate needs.

Facilities are strongly encouraged to continue attempting to procure contrast media through existing vendors and relationships within their respective operational areas (OA) prior to elevating the resource request to their MHOAC.

Please submit all resource requests with completed questionnaire (PDF) in accordance with all applicable established local procedures and the California Public Health & Medical Emergency Operations Manual.

If you have any questions about this AFL, please contact your respective Medical and Health Operational Area Coordinator (MHOAC) using the provided link: MHOAC Program Contact Information (PDF).
