× The federal government has shut down due to the failures of the President and Congress to continue government funding. Millions of Californians receiving benefits from state programs may be impacted. For now, California’s Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) will continue to provide services and enroll eligible families as long as funding is available. No new federal funding to California WIC will be provided until the President and Congress take action. Families should continue to use their WIC benefits and attend their WIC appointments. This information is subject to change, so please monitor the California WIC website for updates.

Please be wary of potential highly partisan political messaging while visiting federal government websites for information related to the federal government shutdown.

California Vital Data (Cal-ViDa) Query Tool

Welcome to Cal-ViDa!

The Center for Health Statistics and Informatics (CHSI) is pleased to introduce the new California Vital Data (Cal-ViDa) query tool. Cal-ViDa allows users to create custom queries using California's birth and death data.

After creating a Cal-ViDa account, the public can use Cal-ViDa to create a variety of birth and death reports. Users can generate reports with statewide counts as well as counts by county, city, or ZIP Code. Selected demographic variables, such as race/ethnicity and education level, and health indicators, such as birthweight and cause of death, are also available.

New data is added to Cal-ViDa on a monthly basis. For more information on how data in Cal-ViDa is refreshed, please visit the Cal-ViDa Help and FAQ page. Birth data is available from 2018 onwards and death data is available from 2014 onwards. Due to differences in legacy files, no earlier data will be accessible from the application.

Additional datasets of birth and death data from 2017 and earlier, can be found on the California Health and Human Services (CHHS) Open Data Portal. For additional information, please refer to the Cal-ViDa FAQ posted below or consult the CDPH Vital Records Data and Statistics webpage.
