2019 – 2024 Results for Perinatal Equity Initiative Community Advisory Board

Community Advisory Boards (CABs) are required components of each local health jurisdiction (LHJ) PEI activities. They serve as the voice of the community for ensuring that interventions and activities are implemented in a culturally affirming manner and reflect the needs of the LHJ.

CABs are structured as diverse community groups of stakeholders such as, but not limited to:

  • Community-Based Organization (CBO) representatives.
  • PEI and BIH staff and participants.
  • Public Health representatives.
  • Birth workers (doulas, midwives, lactation educators and consultants).
  • Faith-based leaders.
  • Health care providers and health plans.
  • Community members.

CABs guide the development and implementation of PEI interventions, including the required Public Awareness Campaign (PAC), and advise on data collection efforts to ensure community alignment and cultural responsiveness.

During the reporting period, LHJs conducted annual Results Based Accountability (RBA) Turn the Curve (TTC) thinking1 activities with their CAB members and reported subsequently on TTC action items identified that were successfully implemented (see “Is Anyone Better Off?" in the dashboard). TTC provides a framework for LHJs to make effective decisions and collaborative action to move the 'curve' towards achieving their desired targets.

Successes

Collectively, the number of CAB meetings grew from 34 in FY 2019-2020 to 63 in FY 2023–2024. Additionally, the number of CAB members increased from 227 to 784, with most of the desired stakeholder groups represented (86% or higher across intervention years), with most members (98% or higher) finding meetings successful, and most TTC actions successfully implemented (77% or higher).

Opportunities

There are opportunities to improve attendance at CAB meetings.
