Make a plan to vote

Step 1 Register to vote.Voter_Reg-Technology

Register to vote at vote.ca.gov by October 24, 2022.

You can register to vote if you are:

  • a United States citizen
  • a resident of California
  • at least 18 years old or older on Election Day
  • are not prohibited to vote by a
    court or court ruling

You should re-register to vote if you:

  • have moved residences
  • have changed your name
  • want to change political parties

You should check your voter registration status on vote.ca.gov if you have not voted in recent elections. 

If you miss the voter registration deadline, you can complete Same Day Voter Registration at your county elections office, polling place or vote center.

There are three ways to vote in the 2022 General Election:

Vote by mail

All California active registered voters will receive a mail-in ballot for the November 8 General Election. 

Vote-by-mail is safe, secure and easy.

Vote early

Vote in person and/or drop off a mail-in ballot before Election Day.

Vote on Election Day (Nov. 8)

Vote in person and/or drop off a mail-in ballot on November 8, 2022. 

Find your polling place at sos.ca.gov/elections/polling-place

You may also contact your County Elections Offices or the Secretary of Stateā€™s toll-free Voter Hotline at (800) 345-VOTE (8683) for more information about how to vote and receiving election materials in your language, or if youā€™ve been denied your right to vote. Learn more about your voter rights at vote.ca.gov.

Lose your ballot?

Call your County Elections Office to get a new ballot OR vote in-person using a provisional ballot.

Forget to mail in your ballot?

Drop it off at a polling place near you by election day sos.ca.gov/elections/polling-place 

Want to earn extra money and help Californians vote? 

Become a poll worker. Visit pollworker.sos.ca.gov to complete the poll worker application in only 2-3 minutes.

Signing up takes less than three minutes!

Sign-up at WheresMyBallot.sos.ca.gov to receive notifications when your ballot is mailed, received and counted. The California Secretary of Stateā€™s office is working around the clock to protect our elections, so every vote is counted and only counted once.

We vote. We rise. 

Every election is important, even if the president is not on the ballot. This year you will vote on ballot measures, the United States Congress, the California State Legislature, judges, and city officials. 

Votes for these offices and measures directly impact you and your family. Do not give up your voice in shaping your future.

Voting + COVID-19

If you have a weakened immune system or are worried about getting sick, you can skip the polling place and mail in or drop off your ballot instead by election day.

If you are voting in person, protect your health and the health of other voters and election workers by taking the following safety steps: 

  • Wear a high quality mask (N95, KN95, KN94). 
  • Practice physical distancing. 
  • Wash hands before and after entering the voting location. 
  • Use hand sanitizer after touching doors or voting equipment.
