× The federal government has shut down due to the failures of the President and Congress to continue government funding. Millions of Californians receiving benefits from state programs may be impacted. For now, California’s Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) will continue to provide services and enroll eligible families as long as funding is available. No new federal funding to California WIC will be provided until the President and Congress take action. Families should continue to use their WIC benefits and attend their WIC appointments. Office of Health Equity Deputy Director Named a 2015 “Up and Comer” by Modern HealthCare

SACRAMENTO – California Department of Public Health (CDPH) Director and State Public Health Officer Dr. Karen Smith today announced that CDPH Office of Health Equity (OHE) Deputy Director Jahmal Miller has been named a 2015 “Up and Comer” by Modern HealthCare.

“Jahmal’s dedication, vision and leadership in serving the people of California to reduce health and mental health disparities to vulnerable communities is inspiring,” Dr. Smith said. “Recognition of Jahmal’s efforts is well-deserved. CDPH congratulates him on receiving such an honor."

Modern HealthCare annually honors 12 emerging leaders all age 40 and under, who have made significant contributions in the areas of healthcare administration, management or policy early in their careers. This year’s honorees are profiled in the October 12 issue of Modern Healthcare.

Appointed by Governor Jerry Brown in 2013, Miller has been integral to advancing the goals of the office including forming the OHE Advisory Committee, and completing the OHE Strategic Plan and The California Statewide Plan to Promote Health and Mental Health Equity.

Prior to his appointment at CDPH Miller served as a communications manager in brand communication for national community benefit, research and health policy at Kaiser Permanente. He also held multiple positions at Sutter Health in Sacramento, including hospital administration resident and regional manager of strategic marketing and communications.
