× The federal government has shut down due to the failures of the President and Congress to continue government funding. Millions of Californians receiving benefits from state programs may be impacted. For now, California’s Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) will continue to provide services and enroll eligible families as long as funding is available. No new federal funding to California WIC will be provided until the President and Congress take action. Families should continue to use their WIC benefits and attend their WIC appointments. This information is subject to change, so please monitor the California WIC website for updates.

Please be wary of potential highly partisan political messaging while visiting federal government websites for information related to the federal government shutdown.

Office of Problem Gambling

The mission of the Office of Problem Gambling is to provide quality, research-driven leadership in prevention and treatment of gambling disorder.

Effective with the passage of the 2013-2014 Budget Act and associated legislation, the Department of Alcohol and Drug Programs was eliminated July 1, 2013, and OPG transitioned to the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion. CDPH executed the successful transition of OPG from DADP. OPG continues to fulfill its mission under CDPH, administering prevention and treatment programs for problem and pathological gamblers and their families. Welfare and Institutions Code Section 4369.5 requires OPG to generate an annual Transition Legislative Report for five years.

Treatment Program

Transparency is one of our goals in providing research-driven leadership. The OPG conducts many studies and implements quality assurance measures to determine best practices in the fields of gambling disorder prevention and treatment.

In January 2015, CDPH OPG contracted with EVALCORP Research and Consulting to design and conduct an independent evaluation of CalGETS. The Evaluation Report provides detailed information regarding the pilot program’s design, implementation, outcomes and key accomplishments.
