× The federal government has shut down due to the failures of the President and Congress to continue government funding. Millions of Californians receiving benefits from state programs may be impacted. For now, California’s Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) will continue to provide services and enroll eligible families as long as funding is available. No new federal funding to California WIC will be provided until the President and Congress take action. Families should continue to use their WIC benefits and attend their WIC appointments. This information is subject to change, so please monitor the California WIC website for updates.

Please be wary of potential highly partisan political messaging while visiting federal government websites for information related to the federal government shutdown.

Birth and Death Statistical Reports

The Center for Health Statistics and Informatics has made available data tables for counts of births and deaths on the California Health and Human Services Agency (CHHS) Open Data Portal.

Please note that within these datasets, counts of less than eleven have been masked pursuant to the requirements of the CHHS Data De-Identification Guidelines (PDF).

Birth Tables

Death Tables

  • Statewide Death Profiles – Yearly and monthly data on the number of deaths for the State of California as a whole. Includes tabulation by leading underlying cause of death categories.
  • Death Profiles by County – Yearly and monthly data on the total number of deaths for California counties. Includes tabulation by leading underlying cause of death categories.
  • Death Profiles by ZIP Code – Yearly data on the number of deaths by ZIP Code for residents of the State of California.

Additional Resources

  • Cal-ViDa can be used to create a variety of birth and death reports. Users can generate reports with statewide counts as well as counts by county, city, or ZIP Code. Selected demographic variables, such as race/ethnicity and education level, and health indicators, such as birthweight and cause of death, are also available.
  • Tabular Reports (PDF) cost less than the creation of custom data files for research requests. These data are subject to cost recovery pursuant to California Health and Safety Code Section 102230. Once the application is received and reviewed, staff will provide a cost estimate and the approximate time needed to prepare the report.
  • Research applications require approval from the Committee for the Protection of Human Subjects (CPHS). This process can take approximately 2-4 months after CDPH receives a complete application package.
